About

What is OpenMote.com?

OpenMote.com was developed to evangelize open source hardware and software platforms for wireless sensor network devices.

I initially developed this site because I wanted a place to share some of my personal designs for open source motes.  However, I quickly realized that getting started in open source development for wireless sensor networks is can be pretty overwhelming.  So, I'm hoping that this site will evolve into a resource for others looking to get started in this space (or in embedded systems in general).  As this is a product of my spare time, it moves a bit slower than I (and others) would like... email me if there's something you'd like posted or fixed.

The Tutorials page contains tutorials (or links to tutorials) on how to do things like design your own mote, or set up a development environment for one of the embedded OS's, etc.

The Software and Hardware pages provide links to and descriptions of many of the open source hardware and software platforms that are currently available.

The only requirement for being featured on this site is that the design files (source code or schematic / layout) are made freely available.

Disclaimer

Unless explicitly stated, the designs and code on this site have not been tested for commercial use.

That said, many open source designs ARE used in commercial wireless sensor network platform offerings.   For example, Arch Rock has built industrial grade offerings upon the open source Epic mote and TinyOS operating system, and Crossbow sells the TelosB mote alongside their own wireless modules.
